Happy Mother’s Day, Jessica Johnson!

Jessica gave birth to twin girls at 3:09 a.m. this morning, Mother’s Day (11 May 08).

On Wednesday, May 7, 2008, the day of her baby shower (and the day after Karl and Jessica’s 3rd anniversary), Jessica went into labor. The next several days were spent in relative boredom at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, trying to avoid giving birth at just 30 weeks.

But Jess got sick, and Saturday night her coughing may have triggered things because her water broke. Before long, a foot appeared!

Both babies were breech, so a “c-section” was performed, and at 3:09 (then again at 3:10 a.m.), Karl and Jess were parents.

Camille was born first (3:09 a.m.). She weighed 3 lbs., 8 oz (1605 grams), and was 16 inches long (40 cm).

Shaylee was born second (3:10 a.m.). She weighed 3 lbs., 4 oz (1480 grams), and was 16.5 inches long (42 cm).

Mom is fine but very tired.

The twins are in intensive care right now. They are so skinny but are doing well.

At a time like this, it is hard not to be so grateful for our Heavenly Father’s goodness to us. What a blessing to live in a time and place where our granddaughters can have such assistance as they start off their new lives here on earth. They were born 11 weeks early.

That makes May a busy party month for the Johnsons: Karl’s birthday, their anniversary, Mother’s Day, and now the twins’ birthday.

Thanks to everyone worldwide for your prayers and kind words.

I’m not saying Tom was excited, but he wore two signs (one in the front, one in the back) all through church.

High Altitude Cake from SCRATCH in Orem, Utah

When we moved from Eagle River, Alaska to Orem, Utah, the high elevation made all my cakes fall. The elevation here is 4,774 feet (1,455 meters).

I asked women in our ward about it, and to my surprise, everyone I asked told me they made their cakes from a box mix.

So I went into a professional cake making shop and asked them. To my astonishment, they told me that they make cakes from a box mix as well.

So, after some trial and error, (and boy were all those errors a trial!), I think I’ve found a way to make it work.

Below is the Black Forrest Gateaux Cake I made this evening, which is I believe a German cake. It is a chocolate cake with with cream and black cherry filling between its layers.

Happy Easter.

The Utah Flash

My name is Sam Pittman and our family bought season tickets to the Utah Flash. It started out just being the parents then I wanted to go too. That’s when they got season tickets for the whole family.

These games are normally on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:00, but lately they have been jumbled up. These games are really fun and they throw free stuff and we have caught t-shirts, beach balls, pizza coupons and more.

The players are WAY cool as well. After each game, I line up to visit with a couple of them and get their autographs. We were sad when they traded Michael Cuffee; we really like him. Michael was the first player who I had autograph my hat.

Below are some photos I have taken at Utah Flash home games, here in Orem, Utah.

Emily’s Funny Valentine

Our family has season tickets to watch the Utah Flash. We really like going as a family to watch them play. Last night, for Family Night, we made a couple of posters for the game.My poster said, “Flash Fox be my Valentine.”

The Flash Fox is my favorite Mascot. He is really fun and funny.

When Flash Fox saw my poster, he pointed at it and nodded. Later in the game, Flash Fox came out onto the court wearing underwear with hearts on it. He held a sign that said, “Be Mine.”

Flash Fox ran through the audience and stopped at me and gave me a box of chocolates. We took some photos together. I put these photos into our family album of the Utah Flash.

Tom and I see a Utah Jazz Game

Tom and I drove up to Salt Lake City (from Orem) to catch a Jazz game at the Energy Solutions Arena.

Energy Solutions Arena is quite a bit bigger than the David O. McKay center where we usually watch basketball games (the D-League’s Utah Flash). I felt like I was about to see a Quiddich match!

Of course, the Jazz won!
